FORT ANNE, PORT ROYAL & MELANSON SETTLEMENT

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITES OF CANADA
Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia

Surging into Annapolis Basin, the powerful tides carry not only the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Bay of Fundy, but also the collective memory of North America's early colonial history.

They carry the echo of the big guns at Fort Anne, where once the destiny of the continent hung in the balance. The imagination's ear can still hear the voices of the Mi'kmaq, who travelled here for thousands of years, or the music and laughter of the Order of Good Cheer at the Habitation, which Champlain helped found at Port-Royal in 1605. The centuries-old spirit of the Acadian people who worked the dykelands around the Annapolis Basin is as strong as the tides themselves. There is magic in the landscape around the national historic sites of Canada in Annapolis Royal.

See, feel and hear more stories!

Port-Royal

Canada's first major historical reconstruction opens the emotions to the heart of Canadian history in one of North America's oldest communities. Be a kid again. Play! Explore! Let your imagination soar. Costumed animators share the stories of the men who lived here. In the Common Room, you may even hear the distant echo of laughing voices as members of the Order of Good Cheer share their table with the Mik'maq.

Melanson Settlement

The soil is almost as rich as the secrets it holds at this important archaeological site. Before they were deported in 1755, Acadian families farmed the dykelands along the Annapolis River. A short (193 metres) interpretive trail tells the story of the Acadian village that was once here.

Fort Anne

Canada's most attacked fort and oldest national historic site has a past that's filled with intrigue. See, touch and feel it. The fort's impressive heritage tapestry records some of the big events that took place here. Every stitch is a story - a moment in time - that connects the lives of people during the struggle for empire between Britain and France in the 17th and 18th centuries. Join in on a guided tour. Walk along the shore. Listen to the seagulls. Feel the sun on your face as time blurs in the mists of history.
